Governor Brown Signs Energy Agreement with Mexico

7-29-2014

MEXICO CITY - A day after signing a comprehensive climate change pact with the Mexican government, Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. today signed an agreement with Mexico's Secretary of Energy Pedro Joaquín Coldwell to foster cross-border renewable energy investments.

"California and Mexico both take the low-carbon imperative with utmost seriousness," said Governor Brown. "By this agreement, we intend to work together to dramatically increase solar, wind and other renewable investments."

The agreement will ensure that Mexico and California will work closely together to promote energy efficient and renewable energy.

Among other things, the agreement calls on California and Mexico to work together on clean energy research, development and deployment; support investments in clean and efficient energy infrastructure projects; explore integrating Baja California Norte into the California Independent System Operator's Energy Imbalance Market; and support new and expanded markets for clean and energy efficient technologies, including manufacturing and transportation.

A copy of the agreement signed today can be found here.

The Governor first announced the Trade and Investment Mission to Mexico in his 2014 State of the State address and met with Mexican Consuls General from cities across California in March. Last week, ahead of the trip, Governor Brown met with Mexico's Secretary of Foreign Affairs José Antonio Meade Kuribreña in Sacramento and invited Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto to meet later this year in California.

The Governor is joined on the Trade and Investment Mission to Mexico by a delegation of state legislators and senior administration officials. A delegation organized by the California Chamber of Commerce with the help of the California Foundation for Commerce and Education that includes approximately 90 business, economic development, investment and policy leaders from throughout California is also participating in the trade mission.
