Local girl, Amy Chraft, enlists in US Army

18 year Bret Harte grad and Copper resident Amy Chraft is looking forward to Jun 29, 2014 when she takes her oath to serve our country in the United States Army.

Her decision to join was based on many factors; an education, travel and curiosity, as well as seeing her good friend Joshua Hines who enlisted last year, doing so well and loving the Army life. "I took my ASVAB the day he left, trying to understand why he would leave. I talked with the recruiter and learned more. I knew I wanted to become a doctor (pediatrician) someday and this would offer me the opportunity to eventually become a doctor." Amy has chosen the MOS 68W, health care specialist.

While she understands studies are involved she didn't want to graduate from high school just to "sit in another classroom. I wanted to do something."

While at Bret Harte, Amy was active in Bret Harte Renaissance as a coordinator.

Renaissance promotes academic achievement through many avenues but Amy reintroduced PHAT while she was a coordinator. "PHAT equals progress, homework, attendance and tardies."

Amy was also involved with cheerleading as a sophmore and swimming as a senior.

Her favorite subject is science while her least is history.

Throughout her years of schooling she feels that the teacher who motivated her the most was Mr Vern Johnson, her renaissance advisor. "He taught me my hard lessons. Life lessons. He was always pushing us to become a better leaders and to better ourselves."

Though she will miss her little sister, she hopes to be able to come home for holidays and breaks to spend time with her.

Amy moved to Copper when she was only 6 years old and calls it home. While joining the Army she hopes to travel a bit, she said, "I think I might just miss Copper, I've been here my whole life."
