Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. issued the following statement regarding today’s shooting death of a Riverside Police Department officer.

“Anne and I were shocked and saddened to learn of the senseless attack on a Riverside police officer that resulted in his death this morning. We join his family, friends, co-workers and the Riverside community in mourning his death and in honoring his sacrifice.”

The 34-year-old officer was gunned down early Thursday morning as he and a trainee were stopped for a traffic light in the city of Riverside. The officer was assigned as a field training officer.

In honor of the officer, Capitol flags will be flown at half-staff.

The name of the officer is not being released while the suspect in his death is still at large.
