Assemblymember Olsen's Response to AB 340 - public pension reform

Assemblymember Kristin Olsen, R-Modesto, issued the following statement 8-31-12 in response AB 340 (Furutani, D-Lakewood), which addresses public pension reform:

While the proposal that appeared before the legislature today represents a first step toward reform, it falls far short of putting California’s public pension system on a sustainable path. This plan will end some of the system’s most publicized abuses, but the savings realized will only provide pennies on the dollar in terms of what is truly needed for reform. The Governor released his blueprint for pension reform over 10 months ago, yet the proposal voted on today was finalized only 76 hours ago without enough time for thoughtful analysis.

“I encourage Governor Brown to convene a special legislative session this fall so Republicans and Democrats can work together to craft true pension reform in a transparent way that adheres to the legislative process. We owe California taxpayers and those who will rely on public pensions in the future long-term solutions instead of a temporary band-aid on the problem.”
