Sheriff Dept Press Release RE: Dorrington Man Arrested Following a San Andreas Fight

(San Andreas, CA) On July 27, 2012 at approx. 8:55 PM, Calaveras County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to the intersection of Hope Court and Pope Street, San Andreas, for multiple 911 calls regarding a physical fight in the intersection. Upon arrival the deputies found that the involved parties had fled the scene. The deputies obtained additional information that led them to the alleged victim Steven Maldonado (46) of San Andreas, who had self-transported himself to Mark Twain Hospital for injuries sustained during the fight. He suffered injuries to his nose and jaw (no other information on his injuries will be released at this time due to medical privacy).

According to Maldonado, he was driving his vehicle on Pope Street when he encountered a male adult standing in the street. As Maldonado stopped his truck the male, identified as Charles Gartside Williams V (30) of Dorrington, approached the driver’s side window of the vehicle and began punching Maldonado. Williams then got into a vehicle and left the scene. The fight was reportedly over a dog that had been recently hit by a car, whereas Maldonado was accused as being responsible for hitting the dog. There is no further information on a dog being struck by a vehicle in that area. Several people in the area witnessed the fight and mentioned that they thought they saw Williams holding and striking Maldonado with something that looked like a black pipe.

On July 28, 2012, sheriff’s deputies contacted Williams at the Government Center as he was turning himself into the jail for the above incident. The deputies were able to obtain a statement from Williams. He relayed that he had been involved in a fight with Maldonado, but only after Maldonado pushed him and produced a baseball bat, swinging it at him. Williams provided names of other witnesses who confirmed Williams’ statement about the bat.

The deputies re-contacted Maldonado and questioned him on the new information. He confirmed that he did have a baseball bat, but never struck Williams.

Charles Williams, who is currently on state parole, was booked into the Calaveras County Jail on the charges of Assault with a Deadly Weapon (other than a Firearm) and Battery with Serious Bodily Injury. He may also face additional holds associated with his parole status.
