Olsen Introduces Measures to Reform Government by Eliminating Unnecessary Bureaucracy

SACRAMENTO –Assemblymember Kristin Olsen, R-Modesto, has introduced three bills to reform government by eliminating unnecessary bureaucracy. Assembly bills 2328 – 2330 will eliminate the Law Revision Committee, the Electronic Transfer Funds Task Force and the Commission on the Status of Women, which have all been proposed for elimination or consolidation by Governor Brown.

“It is especially important during tough economic times to make sure that government is working efficiently and effectively,” said Olsen. “Eliminating redundant and unnecessary bureaucracy will save taxpayers money and help begin to restore Californians’ trust in government.” 

Specifically, Olsen’s bills will:

• AB 2328- eliminate the Law Revision Commission. The work done by the Commission is not widely utilized and could be done by many other government agencies or commissions.

• AB 2329- eliminate the Electronic Funds Transfer Task Force. The Task Force is responsible for providing a plan on the development and implementation of a new payment dispersal system using electronic funds transfer technology. The Task Force is no longer needed because the plan was completed in 2008.

• AB 2330- eliminate the Commission on the Status of Women, saving the State up to $465,000 annually. Olsen agrees with Governor Brown’s assessment that there are other formal and informal venues for policy development and advocacy on women’s issues that do not require general fund expenditures.

“Reforming government should be a top priority of the Legislature this year,” said Olsen. “By eliminating duplication and streamlining bureaucracy, we can focus the states limited resources on core priorities like public safety and education.”
