On 1/26/12 at approx. 2050 hours Calaveras Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to the area between 3814 and 3940 Parrot’s Ferry Road across from Mt. Zion Church for a report from a citizen that people were trespassing on private property and stealing scrap metal from the property. Upon the deputy’s arrival he found an open gate on a dirt road. A lock and chain had been cut and removed from the gate, and left lying on the ground. The deputy walked the dirt road to investigate the area and found a large amount of scrap metal, vehicles and appliances.
While walking back towards his patrol vehicle the deputy saw a car drive up behind him with its headlights off, and then saw a male, later identified as James Moser, exit the car. The deputy announced himself to Mr. Moser, who upon seeing the deputy, got back into his vehicle, backed from the dirt road, and sped away northbound on Parrot’s Ferry Road. The deputy drove in the direction that Mr. Moser’s vehicle headed, attempting to find him. After a short distance the deputy observed Mr. Moser’s vehicle pass him at a high rate of speed, now heading southbound towards Tuolumne County.
The deputy conducted a traffic stop on Mr. Moser. During the stop the deputy located a loaded handgun and a short-barreled shotgun concealed under the front seat of the vehicle. The deputy also located a large number of prescription medications in the vehicle not belonging to Mr. Moser, as well as burglary tools (bolt cutters, pry bars, drills, and other miscellaneous tools). Upon further investigation the deputy found that Mr. Moser was under the influence of drugs. During the interview Mr. Moser admitted that he did not know the owner of or have permission to be on the property. He also admitted to going to the property in hopes of finding scrap metal and other items. He said that he evaded the deputy because he was scared.
This case will be turned over to the Sheriff’s Detective Division to see if there are any similarities to other thefts in the area.
