The group of 30 youth, with the support of their congregation, served over 200 plates of spaghetti. All the while smiling and serving diners with class and refreshing manners.
20 of the youth plan on traveling to Southern California over Spring break with 6 adult chaperones to the PALA nation reservation to work on the reservation repairing buildings, holding vacation bible school and engaging the youth through songs and games. Pastor Sean said that an intergral part of the trip, due to the language barrier between the Copper youth and the heavily hispanic youth of the PALA nation will be communication through intra mural sports; flag football, softball and what he calls youth explosion. Youth explosion is music that is tailored to the youth of today yet carries a strong message about God.
The PALA band of mission indians reside on a 12,273-acre reservation, established for Cupeño and Luiseño Indians combined to be - Pala.
'Cupeño is of Spanish derivation, adopting the native place-name Kupa and appending Spanish — "eño" to mean a person who lives in or hails from Kupa. The Cupeños, however, called themselves Kuupangaxwichem, or "people who slept here." The Cupans were one of the smallest native American tribes in Southern California.' The Cupa indians existence can be traced back to the late 1700's. By 1903 the tribe was removed from their land and traveled the 40 mile journey to Pala, tis journey is known as 'the trail of tears.'
The Luiseño tribe, originally named Payomkowishum, were named by the Spanish due to their proximity to the Mission San Luís Rey de Francia -the Mission of Saint Louis King of France known as the King of the Missions - founded June 13, 1798 by Father Fermín Francisco de Lasuén.
