Copperopolis Community Center awards young historians

For the past ten years the Copperopolis Community Center’s Historical Group has hosted a historical walking tour of Copperopolis for the second and fourth grade classes of Copperopolis Elementary. Guided by Linda Beck, the walking tour is a lively, fun and informative adventure. The children learn of the founders and the settlers of Copperopolis, the historic buildings, the imports and exports, the outlaws and the infamous.

After the walking tour the Historic Society holds a “Local Lore Art & Writing Contest.” Each child in the school participates in this event. Winners receive cash prizes, Cruiser’s Ice Cream bucks, and ribbons. Along with their prizes, the winning entries are then displayed in windows in Town Square for the whole town and visitors alike to view.   

During an assembly held at Copper School on Thursday December 15, 2011, the 1^st through 3^rd place winners were acknowledged by contest organizers Bette Saylor, Sandy Rollings and Bonnie Schaeffer, and given their ribbons and awards for their art and essays.

The winners were:

Kindergarten: 1^st Brooke Kelly, 2^nd Sabrina Silos, 3^rd Langley Martinez

First grade: 1^st Dustin Miller, 2^nd Maycee Berryman, 3^rd Ashlin Arias

Second Grade: 1^st Haylee Shirley, 2^nd Charlie Boyd, 3^rd Quade Walker

Third Grade: 1^st Camren Nilsen, 2^nd Alexis Benders, 3^rd Constance Gibson

Fourth Grade: 1^st Johnny Henry, 2^nd,Pearl Rollings, 3^rd McKenzie Blair

Fifth Grade: 1^st Andrea Diep, 2^nd Maverick Cano, 3^rd Emma Queirolo

Sixth Grade: 1^st Cesly Serrano, 2^nd Shileen Andico, 3^rd Ashley Hibdon
