Helping Copper Kids, One Backpack at a Time

Solisha Andico had always wanted to do something for the community of Copperopolis. One morning she woke with the perfect idea, to organize and run a backpack drive for the kids of the whole community. “This backpack drive is for ALL the children of Copper” said Solisha, a Bret Harte Senior. The girls wrapped, decorated and distributed 10 boxes throughout Copperopolis in an effort to collect “hopefully” 100 backpacks for the children of the community. They are not only hoping for backpacks, but also school supplies; paper, pencils, pens, glue, tape, rulers, etc. They have called businesses looking for donations, talked with people as they set up the boxes and have told all their friends.
16 year-old Solisha Andico and her little sister 11 year-old Shileen are “always thinking about others” said proud mom Rolinda when asked about their latest community venture.

Solisha aspires to become a Marine Biologist, her love of the coast and the ocean the main drive for her career choice. Shileen, an avid reader, hopes to continue the backpack drive next year, after her sister heads off to college, so that it becomes an annual event to support the kids of the community.
The 2011 drive will continue until August 9, 2011 when the girls, with the help of their mother, will collect all the boxes and sort the donations. On August 13, 2011 they will have a table set up infront of the library to distribute to any child the school supplies collected. (A time has yet to be set.)
The backpack donation boxes are set up at the following locations:
Payless IGA
McDillards Feed Store
Lake Tulloch Resort
Panini’s
Copper Branch Library
Town Square Nail Salon
Saddle Creek Lodge
Umpqua Bank
Coldwell Banker Real Estate
Mark Twain Medical Clinic
