At Thursday's open "I'm Listening" meeting with Supervisor Spellman at Snap's the main theme of discussion was the Copperopolis Library. Eight people converged on Mr Spellman questioning his "inflammatory" post to thepinetree with regards to financial misinformation. He defended his post stating that the document he posted was what he had received from the Head Librarian Maurie Hoekstra. It was pointed out by multiple people that the limited information that was presented was a statistical manuevering that could cause torch and pitchfork mentality. While Spellman conceded that he did have just the bare minimum in facts and had not contacted the branch libraries to receive local financial information he still felt he had a responsibility to deliver information to all his constituents. At this point it was asked why he added opinion to the data sheet he posted on thepinetree. With no clear answer the general consesus was that he needed a clearer spreadsheet.
Spellman turned the conversation to fixing the problem at hand and a brainstorming session began. Marilyn Richardson, library commisioner at large, stated that "Where the library is located is exceedingly important.... proximity to those wihtout transportation." That message was reiterated throughout the brainstorming session. Donations of school modulars was brought into play, donations of property, etc.
When asked when an ultimatum would be handed to the Copper Library, Spellman responded, "I'm pinched. The last thing I want to do is close a library, I would like to see more libraries. .....this will be hashed out in the next six months."
