CAL FIRE Increases Staffing As Fire Threat Expands Additional Seasonal Firefighters Hired From Sacramento Foothills to LA Basin

Sacramento– Despite recent rainfall, CAL FIRE continues to respond to a significant increase in wildfires across much of California. While March rain totals were higher than this winter, the rain has done little to combat drought conditions. Starting Monday, March 31, CAL FIRE will begin hiring additional seasonal firefighters in Central California, the Bay Area region and the Sacramento foothills.

“Even with rain in March, our fire activity has remained 200 percent more over average statewide,” said Chief Ken Pimlott, CAL FIRE director. “The rain ha
s been great, but it has not been enough to make up for our dry winter and California’s drought.

The text of the proclamation is below:

PROCLAMATION
BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA

Eighty-seven years ago, César Chávez was born near his family farm in Yuma, Arizona. During his formative years, Chávez was exposed to the dismal working conditions that migrant workers were forced to endure.

Letter to the Editor re: Copperopolis Pharmacy by Marge Powers

I moved to Copperopolis two years ago, and as I was driving about trying to find my way around, I noticed there was not a pharmacy here, and I must say, I was very disappointed.  Every time I had to needed a prescription filled, I had to drive way out of my way to either Angels Camp or Sonora.  Which I found very inconvenient.

A few months ago, I saw a ‘Pharmacy’ sign on Cosmic Court, off O’Byrnes Ferry Road.  Of course, I was delighted.  The next day, I stopped in the Pharmacy and met Cindy and Kevin Tom.  I found them very committed to customer service as they actually took the time to chat and help me figure out some complicated process with my Insurance Cards, which saved me $25.  You can imagine how thrilled I am not to have to drive all over the country to find a pharmacy, and have these wonderful people bend over backwards to help me.

So, for you folks who haven’t yet tried our new Pharmacy yet, give it a try, you won’t be disappointed!

I am a happy camper.   Thanks for letting me share.   Marge Powers

On this day in History - US Withdraws from Vietnam

March 29, 1973
Two months after the signing of the Vietnam peace agreement, the last U.S. combat troops leave South Vietnam as Hanoi frees the remaining American prisoners of war held in North Vietnam. America's direct eight-year intervention in the Vietnam War was at an end. In Saigon, some 7,000 U.S. Department of Defense civilian employees remained behind to aid South Vietnam in conducting what looked to be a fierce and ongoing war with communist North Vietnam.

In 1961, after two decades of indirect military aid, U.S. President John F. Kennedy sent the first large force of U.S. military personnel to Vietnam to bolster the ineffectual autocratic regime of South Vietnam against the communist North. Three years later, with the South Vietnamese government crumbling, President Lyndon B. Johnson ordered limited bombing raids on North Vietnam, and Congress authorized the use of U.S. troops. By 1965, North Vietnamese offensives left President Johnson with two choices: escalate U.S. involvement or withdraw. Johnson ordered the former, and troop levels soon jumped to more than 300,000 as U.S. air forces commenced the largest bombing campaign in history.
